Ken Aston, appointed to 1966 FIFA referees committee has all the
credit of conceptualizing the concept of red and yellow card in Football, to overcome
the language barrier, in communicating with player.
Inspiration:
The major inspiration came for
FIFA Match: 1966
Quarterfinal Wembley Stadium, England Vs Argentina
Match Referee:
Rudolf Kreitlein
Players Involved in
an on-field brawl: Englishmen Bobby and Jack Charlton was
cautioned while sending off Antonio Rattin Arg player.
Fuss: Due to
communication barrier Referee was not able to clearly convey his message to the
player neither to on lookers.
This incident inspired Ken Aston to find ways to overcome
this language barrier.
Eureka Moment:
Ken Aston was hit with the thought of Traffic orange/yellow
light which demonstrate caution and Red light which commends to stop.
And this resulted ultimately in cropping of defined yellow
and red card use in football.
First Use
These cards were used for the first time in the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico.
